Airvana Recognized for Best Application Concept and Contribution to Standards at 2010 Femto Forum Femtocell Industry Awards
Airvana Femto Family Tablet and Femtocell Standards Team Honored by Industry Group
Chelmsford, MA, June 24, 2010 —
Airvana today announced that the company’s Airvana Femto Family Tablet has been named Best Application Concept, and its Standards Team led by Doug Knisely has been recognized for Contribution to Standards at the
2010 Femto Forum Femtocell Industry Awards.
Designed to honor outstanding contributions to the industry during 2009, the Femto Forum Femtocell Industry Awards winners were announced at the Femtocells World Summit in London on Wednesday, June 23, 2010.
Airvana was named a finalist in four categories and was awarded top honors in the following:
Application Concept – The Airvana Femto Family Tablet: “The Airvana Femto Family Tablet is a femtocell-enabled personal portal for all family communications, media control, and sharing,” explained Fabio Chiussi, Airvana’s vice president of technology for femtocell services. “It is the first example of a femtocell-enabled consumer appliance that brings together a compelling suite of femtozone services that transform the way people stay connected to their family and their media.” The Airvana Femto Family Tablet illustrates the tremendous consumer appeal that femtocell-enabled home appliances can have in the connected digital home.
“As the femtocell industry matures and commercial launches multiply, it is increasingly important to develop unique applications to help drive demand for femtocells,” explained William Webb, Director of Technology Resources, Ofcom, on behalf of the judging panel. “The Airvana Femto Family Tablet stands out as a compelling application that could deliver real value to both operators and end-users based on unique femtocell features such as presence."
Contribution to Standards – Airvana Standards Team led by Doug Knisely, vice president of technology: Airvana’s standards team, led by technology vice president Doug Knisely, has played a leading role in advancing 3GPP and 3GPP2 femtocell standards. In 3GPP, Airvana was an early proponent of Iu-based architectures, helping the industry coalesce around the Iuh standard. The team also played an active role in the adoption IPsec/IKEv2 security protocols. In 3GPP2, Airvana initiated and led activities to define the CDMA2000 femtocell architecture, including SIP/IMS-based 1x circuit services architecture, packet data architecture, security framework, the foundations of femtozone services and femtocell management. These efforts have helped the industry define and ratify femtocell standards in record time.
“There have been many outstanding contributions to femtocell standards and selecting one above another proved very difficult for the judges – indeed this was one of the closest categories of all,” continued Webb. “After much discussion the judges decided that they would prefer the spirit of this award to tend more towards clear individual contributions and on that basis the work of Doug Knisely stood out as being particularly important and demonstrating great dedication over extended periods. The femtocell industry is indeed in his debt.”
“Having Airvana win two categories for The Femto Forum Femtocell Industry Awards is a testament to the work we are doing both as a company and as individuals to advance the market for this important technology,” said Dave Nowicki, vice president of Marketing, Airvana.
